WRITING A GOOD POEM

Poetry is not saying that you love your wife
simply by saying it - I mean, it would not

have impact on anyone but her, would it?
If I write a poem, however, on how her

apparition in a crowded street defeated
me today as much as when I first spotted

her on a sunny lawn some decades ago,
it would make a difference - a poem about

recognizing her face; familiar when I first
saw it, and always new since then.
